Profound Cleome

#3f1061
Notes

Profound Cleome (#3F1061) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (275°, 72%, 22%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Profound
adjective

From the Latin profundus, deep — sharing the same root as the noun profundity. As a color modifier, profound is the literary register for deep beyond ordinary measure — used for darks that read as bottomless or inexhaustible. Sits at the dark end of the grid alongside stygian and cavernous, with slightly more dignity and slightly less menace.

Cleome
noun

Spider flower (Cleome hassleriana) — a tall South American annual cultivated worldwide for its long-stamened pink-and-violet airy racemes. Cleome color refers to a fully bloomed Cleome hassleriana terminal raceme: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the velvet finish of fresh four-petaled long-stamened spider-flower corollas. The genus name comes from the Greek kleíō, to enclose, after the bud-cluster structure.
