Cellared Shikon
Cellared Shikon (#3F0445) is a deep violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (294°, 89%, 14%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Latin cellārium, storehouse — past-participle of cellar. As a color modifier, cellared implies the deep-and-cool-and-architectural quality of Bordeaux-and-Burgundy wine-cellar underground stone-and-oak storage-chamber, with the patina of multi-decade barrel-aging-and-bottle-laying. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to crypted with viticulture register.
Japanese 紫根, gromwell root (Lithospermum erythrorhizon) — the purple-root dye source for traditional Japanese murasaki and the medicinal-herb base for the eponymous shikon ointment used in burn treatment. Shikon color refers to a freshly harvested Lithospermum erythrorhizon root cross-section: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of fresh root dye on hand-spun silk.
