Greek Erebine, of Erebus — adjectival form of Erebus, the primordial deity of darkness in Hesiod's Theogony. The genus Piranga — particularly P. olivacea, the scarlet tanager of North American summer forests, whose breeding-season males are vivid red with black wings.
