Glowering Sugilite
Glowering Sugilite (#3D023F) is a deep violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (298°, 94%, 13%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Middle English gloweren, to stare angrily — present-participle of glower, sharing root with glower and gloom. As a color modifier, glowering implies a deep-and-warm-and-glowering-resentful quality, the dark warm-orange of furnace-mouth-and-Volcanic-vent embered glow. Sits at the deep-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to smouldered and hellish.
A manganese-bearing cyclosilicate gem first described in 1944, with major sources in South Africa's Wessels Mine. The color refers to a polished sugilite cabochon: a saturated, slightly red-shifted deep purple with the matte finish of opaque mineral. Cooler than amethyst, warmer than tanzanite, with the gem-trade rarity of a stone produced commercially from one principal mine and priced accordingly.
