Earnest Vesta Sapphire

Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. Sits in the bold-and-quiet corner of the grid, slightly less luminous than resolute and slightly less institutional than imperial.

Latin Vesta, Roman-goddess-of-hearth. As a color modifier, vesta implies an asteroid-and-hearth-flame-and-bright-and-rocky quality, the visual register of Vesta-asteroid-and-Roman-hearth hand-asteroid-and-hearth-flame-and-bright Vesta-asteroid-and-Roman-hearth-and-Dawn-mission vesta-and-asteroid-and-hearth-flame-and-bright surfaces under Vesta-asteroid-and-Roman-hearth-and-Dawn-mission asteroid-belt-and-Vestal-Temple sacred-flame-light. Sits at the modifier-and-cosmic end of the grid, parallel to ceres and juno in usage.

An iron-and-titanium-bearing corundum — the same mineral as ruby, hardness 9 on the Mohs scale, mined for two millennia from Sri Lanka, Burma, Madagascar, and the Cashmere mines of British India. The color refers to a fine Kashmir-cut sapphire: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the gem's signature internal velvet — a quality of light scattering in the stone that faceted glass cannot replicate. Cooler than cobalt, deeper than azure.
