Twilit Karakoram (#391D82) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (257°, 64%, 31%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. Etymology
An adjectival form of twilight, coined in the late nineteenth century. Twilit describes a color seen at twilight — the slight cooling and desaturation that low ambient light introduces. Sits in the deep-and-cool corner, lighter than somber and bluer than shadowed. Almost exclusively literary.
Central Asian mountain range straddling Pakistan, China, and India — home of K2 and the Hunza Valley's lapis-lazuli mines that supplied the Renaissance with ultramarine pigment. Karakoram color refers to an unworked Sar-e-Sang lapis-lazuli boulder freshly extracted from the Karakoram foothills: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of pyrite-flecked lazurite ore on rough fracture surface.
