Sullen Lazurite

#372f8c
Notes

Sullen Lazurite (#372F8C) is a true blue with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. Its HSL profile (245°, 50%, 37%) places it in the balanced band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Sullen
adjective

Old French solain, solitary via Anglo-French solein. As a color modifier, sullen implies a deep-and-cool-and-withholding quality, the dark cool-gray of Norwegian-fjord mid-winter atmospheric-overcast and saturated-saltwater-cliff in late-November light. Sits at the deep-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to gloomy and saturnine in atmospheric tone.

Lazurite
noun

The principal mineral of lapis lazuli — a sodium-aluminum sulfate-silicate from the Sar-e-Sang mines in Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan, the Renaissance source for ultramarine pigment. Lazurite color refers to a freshly cut Sar-e-Sang lapis face showing the central lazurite nucleus: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of pyrite-flecked lazurite ore.

Moderately saturated colors gain a small bump in P3 — the difference is usually visible side-by-side on wide-gamut hardware but won't change the character of the color.
