Caliginous Aniline (#371A84) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (256°, 67%, 31%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. Etymology
Latin cālīginōsus, misty / dark — derived from cālīgō (mist, gloom). As a color modifier, caliginous implies an obscured, dimmed, slightly-cool-shifted quality where the hue is veiled by darkness or atmospheric fog. Sits at the deep-and-veiled end of the grid, between murky and tenebrous in usage.
Synthetic-organic dye class first synthesized in 1856 by William Henry Perkin from coal-tar derivatives — named after the Portuguese anil (indigo) since Perkin's first mauveine was a synthetic stand-in for natural indigo's overdyed violets. Aniline color refers to a freshly aniline-mauveine-dyed Victorian silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the silky luster of the first-ever industrial synthetic dye on Lyon silk.
