True Gloss Peacock

Old English trēowe, faithful — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as the canonical version of their family. True red, true blue: the saturation is full, the hue is neither shifted nor adulterated. Sits at the center of the bold and crisp buckets, marking the unequivocal middle of any chromatic family.

Old Norse glosi, glossy-shine. As a color modifier, gloss implies a polished-and-reflective-shine quality, the visual register of polished-and-glossy-leather-and-lacquer hand-polished-and-glossy lacquer-and-shellac-and-varnish polished-and-glossy-shine surfaces under polished-and-glossy-lacquer workshop-light. Pavo cristatus, the Indian peafowl whose male displays the most elaborate sexual ornament in birds — a fan of two-meter eyespotted tail feathers in iridescent blue-green. The color is structural, not pigmented: created by interference patterns in the feather barbules. Peacock blue refers to the dominant body color: a saturated, slightly muted teal-blue with the optical depth of structural color. Cooler than persian, warmer than sapphire.
