Radiant Spun Sky

From the Latin radiare, to emit rays — used as a color word since the seventeenth century for hues that read as luminous and emitting. Radiant gold, radiant pink: the implication is high luminance combined with the optical impression of an outward light. Sits in the bright-bucket center alongside glowing.

Old English spinnan, to-spin. As a color modifier, spun implies a hand-spun-fiber quality, the visual register of hand-spinning-wheel hand-spun-and-twisted wool-and-flax-and-cotton hand-spun-fiber-on-spinning-wheel surfaces under hand-spun-and-twisted spinning-wheel working light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to woven and knit in usage.

The blue of a clear sky at noon — produced by Rayleigh scattering, the preferential dispersion of shorter wavelengths through atmospheric molecules. Air itself is colorless; the color we see is sunlight scattered toward our eyes by every cubic kilometer above. The reference shade is mid-latitude noon under a high pressure system: a clean, slightly green-shifted blue with the luminous depth of light scattered across an entire hemisphere of air.
