Bleak Salmon

#310b1f
Notes

Bleak Salmon (#310B1F) is a deep magenta with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (328°, 63%, 12%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary teal. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Bleak
adjective

Old Norse bleikr, pale — sharing root with English bleach. As a color modifier, bleak implies a deep-and-cold-and-comfortless quality, the dark gray-pale of Yorkshire-Moors and Hebrides late-winter atmospheric-light. Sits at the deep-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to grim and bitter in atmospheric register.

Salmon
noun

Named for the flesh of the wild Pacific or Atlantic salmon — Oncorhynchus and Salmo salar — colored by carotenoid pigments in the krill and shrimp the fish eats. A pale, peachy red that sits between coral and apricot, warmer than rose and lighter than vermillion. In farmed salmon the color is added to the feed; in wild salmon, it's diet alone.
