Sanitary Bog Topaz

Latin sānitās, health — adjectival suffix -ary. As a color modifier, sanitary implies a clear-and-clean-and-medical quality, the crisp color of Bauhaus-and-Modern clinical-and-hospital interior-architecture white-tile-and-stainless-steel surfaces. Sits at the crisp-and-clean end of the grid, parallel to hygienic and sterile in usage.

Irish bog, soft-and-wet. As a color modifier, bog implies a peat-soaked-and-soft quality, the visual register of Connemara-and-Yorkshire-Moors peat-bog blanket-bog-and-cotton-grass wet-and-sphagnum-moss surfaces under wet West-of-Ireland atmospheric overcast. A fluorine aluminum silicate gem, hardness 8 on the Mohs scale, mined for centuries in Ouro Preto, Brazil. Imperial topaz is the prized variety: a warm, slightly pink-shifted gold-orange with the high refractive index of a quality cut stone. Cooler than amber, brighter than honey, with the gem's signature internal fire when held to light. Named for the island of Topazos in the Red Sea, though that source produced peridot instead.
