Wholesome Swoop Verdigris

An adjectival form of whole — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as healthy and unadulterated. Wholesome cream, wholesome wheat: moderate saturation combined with the optical impression of a natural origin. Sits at the crisp-bucket alongside genuine.

Old English swāpan, to-sweep-down. As a color modifier, swoop implies a fast-descending-and-arcing-down quality, the visual register of peregrine-falcon-and-stooping-hawk-swoop hand-fast-descending-and-arcing-down peregrine-falcon-and-stooping-hawk-and-eagle swooped-and-fast-descending-and-arcing-down surfaces under peregrine-falcon-and-stooping-hawk-and-eagle cliff-face-and-moorland-and-open-sky raptor-stoop-light. Sits at the modifier-and-mood end of the grid, parallel to flit and glide in usage.

The basic copper carbonate that forms on weathered copper and bronze — the pigment scraped from oxidized metal and used in Renaissance painting before being supplanted by more stable greens. The color refers to a thick verdigris on aged copper roofing or the Statue of Liberty's surface: a soft, slightly muted blue-green with the powdery finish of mineral oxide. Cooler than patina, warmer than seafoam, with the archaeological weight of a mineral made by time.
