Sturdy Lāzhuward

#3072d4
Notes

Sturdy Lāzhuward (#3072D4) is a true azure with a vibrant character. It holds its own as a focal accent, carrying visual weight without tipping into neon territory. Its HSL profile (216°, 66%, 51%) places it in the balanced band at a mid lightness. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary amber. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Sturdy
adjective

Old French estourdi, stunned, reckless — drifted in English to mean robust, well-built. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as durable and unfussy — the working browns of saddle leather, the working greens of pasture wool. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner alongside robust and solid.

Lāzhuward
noun

The Persian word for lapis lazuli — the etymological source of every Western language's word for azure (Arabic al-lāzaward → Old French azur → English azure). Lāzhuward names the stone mined from the Sar-e-Sang valley of Afghanistan. The color refers to a polished Afghan lapis cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of high-grade lapis.
