Hollowed Indygo

#2e145f
Notes

Hollowed Indygo (#2E145F) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (261°, 65%, 23%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Hollowed
adjective

Old English holh, hollow — past-participle of hollow. As a color modifier, hollowed implies the deep-and-cavernous-and-architectural quality of carved-out-cave-and-tunnel interior, particularly the Cappadocian and Lalibela hand-carved rock-cut churches and underground cities. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to cavernous with hand-carved register.

Indygo
noun

Polish for indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) — adopted into Polish color terminology during the 18th-century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's textile-trade contact with Ottoman indigo merchants. Indygo color refers to a freshly indygo-dyed Polish-folk linen: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of multi-bath fermentation indigo on hand-spun linen. Cooler than English indigo and warmer than Russian fioletovyy.
