Old French hardi, bold / brave — past-participle of hardir (to make brave). Saccharum officinarum, the tropical grass whose stems are pressed for the world's sugar — cultivated since prehistoric times in Papua New Guinea and now grown across the tropical belt. The color refers to fresh sugarcane stalks at harvest: a saturated, slightly cool yellow-green with the satin finish of segmented grass culm.
