Macabre Zǐ
Macabre Zǐ (#27092C) is a deep violet with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Etymology
French macabre, possibly from Macabre (the medieval Danse Macabre) or Hebrew meqabber (gravedigger). As a color modifier, macabre implies a deep-and-funereal-and-uncanny quality, the dark cool-gray of medieval-and-Victorian memento-mori iconography. Sits at the deep-and-funereal end of the grid, parallel to funereal with uncanny-and-grotesque overtone.
Chinese 紫, purple — the imperial court color of the Tang and Song dynasties, derived from Lithospermum erythrorhizon (gromwell) and overdyed with Polygonum tinctorium. Zǐ color refers to a Tang-dynasty imperial robe field: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the silk luster of multi-bath gromwell-root-and-indigo overdye on tussah silk. Cooler than zǐsè (formal deep purple).
