Lush Spit Midnight

Middle English lush, possibly from lascious, lascivious — a word that drifted from sensual ripeness toward visual abundance. Used as a color word since the eighteenth century for the saturated greens of well-watered foliage and the deep saturated jewel tones of velvet upholstery. Used across the deep and bold buckets where the hue is simultaneously dark and vivid.

Old English spitu, narrow point of land. As a color modifier, spit implies a narrow-projection quality, the visual register of Cape-Cod-and-Spurn-Head narrow-tide-deposited sand-spit-and-shingle hand-walked coastal surfaces extending into open water. Sits at the modifier-and-place end of the grid, parallel to strand and cay in usage.

The color of the sky at midnight on a clear, moonless night, far from city lights — almost black, but with a slight blue cast where star-scattered light reaches the eye. The color refers to that exact moment: a very deep, slightly violet-shifted near-black blue with the optical depth of a sky stripped of every direct light source.
