Obsidian Iris
Obsidian Iris (#252E94) is a true blue with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. It works across type, buttons, and borders, saturated enough to feel deliberate but balanced enough to not fight the rest of the palette. Etymology
Volcanic glass — molten rhyolite cooled too quickly to crystallize. Mined since the Stone Age for blade-edges (sharper than surgical steel) and ground into mirrors by the Aztec priesthood for divination. The color refers to a polished obsidian flake from Mount Hekla or Glass Buttes, Oregon: a deep, slightly blue-shifted black with the high-gloss conchoidal fracture of natural glass. Cooler than onyx, glossier than coal.
The genus Iris — three thousand named cultivars descended principally from I. germanica, the bearded iris of European gardens since the Roman Empire. Named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, the messenger between gods and mortals. The color refers to a fresh purple-blue iris bloom: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted deep blue with the velvet finish of an iris fall — the curved lower petal that gives the flower its signature bee-attractor structure.
