Pithed Periwinkle
Pithed Periwinkle (#240947) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (266°, 78%, 16%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
Old English piþa, pith / inner stalk — past-participle of pith. As a color modifier, pithed implies a deep-and-cored-out quality where the visual surface has been excavated to reveal interior darkness. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to hollowed and cored.
Vinca minor, the trailing groundcover of European woodland whose pale blue-violet flowers gave English the color name in the eighteenth century. Distinct from Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle, the source of vincristine for chemotherapy). The color refers to the corolla of a fresh Vinca flower: a soft, slightly violet-shifted pale blue with the matte finish of five-petaled bloom. Lighter than bluebell, cooler than lavender.
