Pithed Yamaai (#201A30) is a deep indigo with an earthy character. It leans grounded and natural, the kind of color that plays well with wood, clay, linen, and warm neutrals. Etymology
Old English piþa, pith / inner stalk — past-participle of pith. As a color modifier, pithed implies a deep-and-cored-out quality where the visual surface has been excavated to reveal interior darkness. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to hollowed and cored.
Japanese mountain indigo, Mercurialis leiocarpa — a wild herb used for dyeing in the Heian period (794–1185) before cultivated aizome indigo supplanted it. Yamaai color refers to a freshly yamaai-dyed silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-violet with the matte finish of mineral-mordanted natural dye. The plant is the only naturally occurring indican-type indigo precursor in Japan.
