Hollowed Speedwell

#1e0a40
Notes

Hollowed Speedwell (#1E0A40) is a deep indigo with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (262°, 73%, 15%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary lime. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Hollowed
adjective

Old English holh, hollow — past-participle of hollow. As a color modifier, hollowed implies the deep-and-cavernous-and-architectural quality of carved-out-cave-and-tunnel interior, particularly the Cappadocian and Lalibela hand-carved rock-cut churches and underground cities. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to cavernous with hand-carved register.

Speedwell
noun

Veronica chamaedrys, the small-flowered creeping speedwell of European hedgerows and lawn margins — named speedwell in folk Latin for its old reputation as a wound-healing herb. The color refers to a fresh speedwell flower: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted bright blue with the matte finish of a small four-petaled bloom. Cooler than periwinkle, warmer than cornflower, with the wildflower weight of a plant most often noticed by accident in a lawn.
