Phosphorescent Quilt Jade

Greek phōsphóros, light-bringer — adjectival suffix -escent. As a color modifier, phosphorescent implies a saturated-and-cool-glow-after-stimulation quality, the bright cool-green-blue color of Cu-doped-ZnS glow-in-the-dark photoluminescent surfaces. Sits at the bright-and-cool end of the grid, parallel to fluorescent and luminous in usage.

As a color modifier, quilt implies a hand-quilted-padded-textile quality, the visual register of American-and-English-quilt hand-quilted-and-padded patchwork-and-coverlet hand-quilted-and-padded textile surfaces under American-and-English hand-quilted-and-padded textile workshop-light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to tufted and flock in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
