Stimulating Wake Jade

Latin stimulāns, spurring on — present-participle of stimulate, derived from stimulus (a goad). As a color modifier, stimulating implies a saturated-and-arousing-and-attentive quality where the hue increases visual-and-cognitive engagement. Sits at the bright-and-active end of the grid, parallel to invigorating and bracing in usage.

Old English wacian, to be awake. As a color modifier, wake implies a morning-rising-and-dawn quality, the visual register of first-light-and-dawn-rising atmospheric soft-low-light Rayleigh-scattered first-of-the-day pre-dawn-and-dawn surfaces under first-light dawn-rising light. Sits at the modifier-and-time end of the grid, parallel to rise and morn in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
