Etymology

Heavy
adjective

Old English hefig, weighty — cognate with heave. Used as a color modifier since at least the seventeenth century to indicate weight in saturation as much as value: heavy with pigment, heavy-bodied. A magnesium-iron-aluminum phosphate mineral — distinct from lapis lazuli despite the etymological cousin. Mined principally in Yukon Territory (Canada) and Madagascar. The color refers to a polished lazulite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of opaque phosphate mineral.
