Old English sōt, soot — adjectival suffix -y. As a color modifier, sooty implies the deep-matte-black quality of multi-decade chimney-and-furnace soot-and-creosote-residue surfaces, the Brontë-period Yorkshire-cottage hearth-and-flue patina. A calcium sulfate mineral — the anhydrous form of gypsum — sometimes occurring in saturated deep-blue varieties known as Angelite or Blue Anhydrite. Mined principally in Peru. The color refers to a polished blue anhydrite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of opaque sulfate mineral.
