An adjectival form of smoke, used as a color word since at least the fourteenth century. A magnesium-iron-aluminum phosphate mineral — distinct from lapis lazuli despite the etymological cousin. Mined principally in Yukon Territory (Canada) and Madagascar. The color refers to a polished lazulite cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of opaque phosphate mineral.
