Latin vernāculus, of-the-household-slave / native — adjectival suffix -ar. Augite color refers to a freshly cleaved Etna augite phenocryst face: a saturated, slightly cool deep black with the glassy finish of monoclinic-system iron-magnesium-calcium pyroxene. The Greek genus name augē (luster) refers to its bright cleavage-reflection.
