Modest Zen Ocean

Latin modestus, moderate — used as a color modifier since the sixteenth century for hues that read as understated and unwilling to claim more visual space than they need. Modest taupe, modest beige: moderate-to-low saturation combined with optical restraint. Sits at the crisp-and-quiet edge of the grid alongside quiet and plain.

Japanese 禅, Zen Buddhism. As a color modifier, zen implies a stripped-down-and-meditative-Mahayana quality, the visual register of Japanese-Sōtō-and-Rinzai-Zen Zen-Buddhist hand-laid rock-garden-and-tatami-and-shōji-screen meditation-hall surfaces under Sōtō-and-Rinzai-Zen Kyoto-temple-garden meditative quiet light. Sits at the modifier-and-cultural end of the grid, parallel to tao and sufi in usage.

The body of saltwater that covers seventy percent of Earth's surface — a single connected mass divided by convention into Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic. The color refers to the average reflectance of mid-depth temperate ocean: a saturated, slightly green-shifted deep blue with the optical depth of a body of water that absorbs all light below the photic zone. Deeper than mediterranean, cooler than peacock.
