Etymology

Inky
adjective

An adjectival form of ink, used as a color modifier since the eighteenth century to suggest the deep saturated black of fresh writing ink seen against white paper. Less about literal blackness than about the optical density of a fluid that absorbs light through its full thickness. Used at the dark end of any saturated hue: an inky blue is a deep saturated blue with the optical depth of pigment in solution.

Japanese onando-iro (御納戸色) — honored storehouse color, the saturated grayed-blue of pre-modern Japanese clothing storehouse interiors. Traditional Edo-period onando was used in samurai household interiors and the linings of formal court dress. The color refers to a onando-painted Edo storehouse wall: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-gray with the matte finish of weathered distemper paint.
