Volcanic glass — molten rhyolite cooled too quickly to crystallize. The color refers to a polished obsidian flake from Mount Hekla or Glass Buttes, Oregon: a deep, slightly blue-shifted black with the high-gloss conchoidal fracture of natural glass. Cooler than onyx, glossier than coal.
The genus Atriplex — saltbushes, the salt-tolerant gray-green shrubs of saline desert, beach, and salina habitats from California to Australia. The color refers to a clump of A. canescens in Mojave Desert: a soft, slightly cool silver-green with the matte finish of salt-encrusted leaf.
