Brilliant Faun Jade

From the Italian brillante, sparkling — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as optically active beyond their literal saturation. Brilliant green, brilliant blue: the implication is luminance combined with the slight sparkle of a high-refractive surface. Sits at the bright-bucket center alongside vivid and bright.

Latin Faunus, Roman-half-goat-rural-deity. As a color modifier, faun implies a half-goat-and-pastoral-and-Arcadian quality, the visual register of Roman-Faunus-and-Arcadian-pastoral-faun hand-half-goat-and-pastoral-and-Arcadian Roman-Faunus-and-Arcadian-pastoral-faun-and-Pan faun-and-half-goat-and-pastoral-and-Arcadian surfaces under Roman-Faunus-and-Arcadian-pastoral-faun-and-Pan Lupercalia-and-Arcadia-and-pipes-of-Pan pastoral-Arcadian-light. Sits at the modifier-and-myth end of the grid, parallel to satyr and dryad in usage.

Two minerals share the name: nephrite (a calcium-magnesium silicate, dominant in Chinese jade) and jadeite (a sodium-aluminum silicate, dominant in Burmese imperial jade). Both have been carved in China since at least the Neolithic. The color refers to high-quality apple-green jadeite: a saturated, slightly muted yellow-green with the waxy translucency of polished stone. Cooler than apple, warmer than mint, with the millennial cultural weight of yu, the stone of heaven.
