Etymology

Infernal
adjective

Latin infernālis, of the lower realms — derived from infernus (underworld). As a color modifier, infernal implies the deep-glowing-furnace-darkness of Dante-Inferno-and-Bosch-tryptich infernal imagery, with the warm undertone of fire-light against shadow. Sits at the deep-and-warm end of the grid, parallel to hellish and warmer than Hadean.

The Japanese traditional indigo-dyeing technique — aizome — using Persicaria tinctoria (Japanese indigo) and natural fermentation in clay vats. The dyer is called aishi (indigo master), trained over decades. The color refers to a freshly aizome-dyed cotton: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of multi-bath natural-indigo dye.
