Old French tracier, to trace — sharing root with English trace and track. As a color modifier, tracer implies a saturated-and-streak-of-light quality, the bright color of military-tracer-round and long-exposure-photography light-trail visual streak. The Catalan and Spanish word for sea — used in Mar Menor (Spanish), Mar de la Tranquilidad, and the saturated blue-green of Iberian Mediterranean coast. The color refers to the Mar Cantábrico off northern Spain at sunset: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-green with the optical depth of cold Atlantic water.
