Stately Larkspur
Stately Larkspur (#087CFF) is a true azure with a neon character. It sits at the high-saturation edge of its family. Use it sparingly, as signage, accent, or highlight against darker surfaces. An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. Delphinium consolida and its garden cousins — the tall spired wildflower of European meadows whose name means little lark for the spurred shape of its blossoms. The color refers to a fresh larkspur stalk in cottage-garden bloom: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted blue with the matte finish of multi-petaled flowers stacked along a single stem. Cooler than cornflower, warmer than periwinkle, with the literary weight of a flower in Tennyson and Heaney alike.
