Primal Manganite

#080724
Notes

Primal Manganite (#080724) is a deep blue with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (242°, 67%, 8%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary yellow. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Primal
adjective

Latin prīmālis, first — adjectival suffix -al, derived from prīmus (first). As a color modifier, primal implies a neutral-and-original-and-foundational quality where the hue carries the visual register of cave-painting-and-prehistoric-art original-and-foundational-mineral-pigment color-decision. Sits at the neutral-and-foundational end of the grid, parallel to primary and primal in usage.

Manganite
noun

γ-MnO(OH) manganese hydroxide-oxide mineral — a deep-black orthorhombic mineral mined principally at Ilfeld in Germany and Negaunee in Michigan. Manganite color refers to a freshly cleaved Ilfeld manganite prismatic-cluster face: a saturated, slightly cool deep black with the metallic finish of orthorhombic manganese-hydroxide-oxide. One of the principal ores of manganese metal, also a steel-alloy and dry-cell-battery component.
