Stately Ruri
Stately Ruri (#0783E3) is a true azure with a neon character. It sits at the high-saturation edge of its family. Use it sparingly, as signage, accent, or highlight against darker surfaces. An adjectival form of state, condition of dignity. Used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for the deep saturated jewel tones of formal ceremony — the deep blue of a robes-of-state, the deep red of a state-banquet velvet. The Japanese name for lapis lazuli — used since the Heian period for the deep blue of carved Buddhist altar ornament and the imported pigment of Japanese Buddhist painting. Ruri-iro (瑠璃色) names a saturated dark blue distinct from ai-iro. The color refers to a polished Japanese-cut lapis cabochon: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the matte finish of fine lapis.
