Ebon Fiji

#072c2a
Notes

Ebon Fiji (#072C2A) is a deep cyan with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (177°, 73%, 10%) places it in the balanced band at a dark lightness. It works well as a headline, icon, or deep background in an otherwise light layout, pairing cleanly with cream, bone, and warm neutrals. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary red. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Ebon
adjective

A poetic shortening of ebony — used principally in nineteenth-century verse and Edgar Allan Poe (The Ravenebon bird). As a color modifier, ebon is a literary register for deep black with slight warmth, distinct from the cooler inky and the harder jet. Carries the same weight as the wood it borrows from.

Fiji
noun

The Melanesian archipelago — and the saturated turquoise of Fijian lagoons surrounding the Yasawa and Mamanuca island groups. Fiji refers to a Fijian lagoon at high tide: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue-green with the optical clarity of warm South Pacific water.
