Pulsing Hemp Sky

The progressive participle of pulse, to throb. Used as a color modifier for hues that read as if they were alternating between two states of luminance — the vibration of a high-saturation color against a contrasting background. Sits in the bright-bucket center alongside electric, with the implication of optical motion rather than static luminance.

Old English henep, hemp-plant. As a color modifier, hemp implies a coarse-bast-fiber quality, the visual register of Russian-and-Italian-and-Far-East-hemp hand-retted-and-spun-hemp-fiber bast-fiber rope-and-canvas-and-cordage hemp-textile surfaces under hand-retted-and-spun-hemp working light. Sits at the modifier-and-texture end of the grid, parallel to cord and twine in usage.

The blue of a clear sky at noon — produced by Rayleigh scattering, the preferential dispersion of shorter wavelengths through atmospheric molecules. Air itself is colorless; the color we see is sunlight scattered toward our eyes by every cubic kilometer above. The reference shade is mid-latitude noon under a high pressure system: a clean, slightly green-shifted blue with the luminous depth of light scattered across an entire hemisphere of air.
