Smoldering Kelp
Smoldering Kelp (#036C05) is a deep green with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (121°, 95%, 22%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. Etymology
The progressive participle of smolder, to burn slowly without flame. Used as a color word since the late nineteenth century for the deep reds and oranges of barely-flame coal — the warm saturated darks where the heat is internal rather than emitted. Sits in the bold-and-warm corner, slightly less luminous than burning and slightly less calm than rich.
Large brown algae of the order Laminariales — the giant Macrocystis pyrifera of California's coast and the smaller Laminaria digitata of British shores. Kelp color refers to fresh kelp washed up on a Pacific beach at low tide: a deep, slightly muted dark green-brown with the satin finish of marine alga.
