Old English hēah-boren, high-born — past-participle of bear. The genus Polypodium — small evergreen ferns that grow on rocks and tree branches in temperate forests. The color refers to mature P. vulgare fronds: a saturated, slightly cool deep yellow-green with the satin finish of small persistent fern leaves.
