Vaulted Kihachijō
Vaulted Kihachijō (#033971) is a deep azure with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (211°, 95%, 23%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary orange. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Old French voulte, vault via Latin volūta (rolled) — past-participle of vault. As a color modifier, vaulted implies the deep-and-architectural-and-Gothic quality of Salisbury-Cathedral-and-Chartres-Cathedral nave-vault overhead-stone-arched ceiling. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to cavernous with cathedral-vault register.
The traditional indigo-dyed silk of Hachijō island in Tokyo's southern archipelago — produced from native kobaicha (yellow-brown) and aogarami (deep blue) dyes since at least the eighteenth century. Kihachijō-iro refers to the saturated medium blue of the silk: a saturated, slightly cool deep blue with the satin finish of plant-dyed island silk.
