Old English eornost, seriousness, zeal. Used as a color modifier since the nineteenth century for hues that read as committed but unshowy — the working blues of denim, the deep greens of Quaker meetinghouses. The Māori name for New Zealand — the land of the long white cloud — and the saturated deep green of New Zealand's South Island fjordland and fern understory. Aotearoa refers to a Fiordland forest understory: a saturated, slightly cool deep yellow-green with the matte finish of Cyathea tree-fern foliage.
