Hollowed Hyacinth

#012045
Notes

Hollowed Hyacinth (#012045) is a deep azure with a jewel character. It carries the deep, saturated richness of a gemstone. Authoritative and slightly formal, it works well for type and heavy UI elements. Its HSL profile (213°, 97%, 14%) places it in the highly saturated band at a dark lightness. Best used in small doses, like logos, CTAs, focus rings, or highlight text, where its saturation becomes a feature rather than noise. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary orange. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.

Etymology

Hollowed
adjective

Old English holh, hollow — past-participle of hollow. As a color modifier, hollowed implies the deep-and-cavernous-and-architectural quality of carved-out-cave-and-tunnel interior, particularly the Cappadocian and Lalibela hand-carved rock-cut churches and underground cities. Sits at the deep-and-architectural end of the grid, parallel to cavernous with hand-carved register.

Hyacinth
noun

Hyacinthus orientalis, the bulb cultivated in Persian and Ottoman gardens since at least the eleventh century, named in Greek myth for the youth Hyakinthos accidentally killed by Apollo. The color refers to a fresh purple-blue hyacinth in spring bloom: a saturated, slightly violet-shifted blue with the matte finish of densely packed corollas. Cooler than larkspur, warmer than iris, with the perfumed weight of a flower whose scent fills a greenhouse from doorway to back wall.
