Tangerine Dream is the orange of borrowed enthusiasm — saturated enough to read as confident, never quite landing in red. It is the citrus the eye expects when someone says orange and means it.
Borrowed from a fruit, then a band
Tangerine entered English in the 1840s as the adjective for of Tangier, the Moroccan port that exported the small orange variety to Europe. The fruit dropped its geography over a century; the color name kept the memory.
Dream is the late twentieth-century half — a decorator's modifier that turned shade names into mood signals. By the time the German experimental band picked it up in 1967, the phrase already meant a particular kind of optimistic warmth: orange, but lighter on its feet than terracotta or rust.
A mid-saturation warm, sitting just south of yellow
Sits at OKLCH lightness 0.69, chroma 0.18, hue 47° — a warm orange inside the comfortable saturation band where the eye reads color as vivid without flagging it as garish. Push the chroma any higher and it tips into highlighter; pull it lower and it slumps into peach.
Rec. 709 luminance reads about 0.40 — bright enough that body text needs near-black, dim enough that a small white badge on top still pops. The color wants to be the figure, not the ground; large blocks of it overwhelm a page faster than a comparable cool tone.
Pairs that hold up
Triadic with a deep teal (around #16afa6) and a desaturated violet (#7d76b8) — a 1970s graphic-design palette that still photographs well. Add a true off-white surface and you have a Saul Bass title sequence in three chips.
Holds its own as a single accent on dark navy or near-black. Loses presence on cream or warm beige — the warmth doubles up and the color stops having a job to do.
