Greek néon, new — element-name (atomic-number 10), discovered by William Ramsay in 1898. The genus Phoenicopterus — wading birds whose pink-orange plumage comes from carotenoid pigments in the brine shrimp and algae they eat. The color refers to a Caribbean flamingo's neck plumage: a soft, slightly cool pink-orange with the matte finish of dietary-pigmented feathers. Cooler than coral, warmer than salmon.
