Ghostly Pompeii

Etymology
An adjectival form of ghost — used as a color modifier since the seventeenth century for hues that read as transparent or insubstantial. The Roman city buried by Vesuvius's 79 CE eruption — and the deep saturated red used on the wall frescoes preserved by the ash, named Pompeian Red for the place. The color refers to the Villa of the Mysteries fresco background: a saturated, slightly cool deep red with the matte finish of cinnabar-and-iron-oxide pigment in lime plaster. Deeper than crimson, cooler than vermillion.
