Latin refulgēns, shining-back — present-participle of refulgere, sharing root with fulgor (lightning). The smoky-yellow variety of quartz — named for the Cairngorm Mountains of the Scottish Highlands where it has been mined for traditional Scottish jewelry since the medieval period.
