Old English āwacnian, to awaken — present-participle of awaken. Diospyros kaki, the East Asian persimmon — a fruit eaten ripe from the tree in Japan since at least the eighth century, where its color is named kaki-iro. The fall color of the unblemished astringent fruit: a dense, slightly red orange with the velvet finish of a wax-skinned Hachiya. Closer to maple syrup than to citrus, with the patient warmth of a fruit that takes a hard frost to sweeten.
