Neon Sidon
Neon Sidon (#ED98ED) is a soft violet with a cool character. It leans cool, sitting on the blue, green, and violet side of the wheel. Quiet and dependable, a fit for product UI and data visualization. Its HSL profile (300°, 70%, 76%) places it in the balanced band at a light lightness. It works as a background wash, large-area fill, or soft illustration tone. Add a darker ink of the same hue when you need type over it. For a confident two-color system, pair it with its complementary green. For something softer, pull in its analogous neighbors on either side of the wheel.
Etymology
Greek néon, new — element-name (atomic-number 10), discovered by William Ramsay in 1898. As a color modifier, neon implies a saturated-and-electric-glow quality, the bright color of Las-Vegas-and-Times-Square neon-marquee gas-discharge-tube emission. Sits at the bright-and-electric end of the grid, parallel to electric and fluorescent in usage.
Ancient Phoenician city on the Lebanese coast — co-eval with Tyre in Tyrian purple production, and the slightly older of the two purple-dye centers. Sidon color refers to a Sidon-produced Tyrian purple-dyed Phoenician trade textile: a saturated, slightly cool deep violet with the matte finish of multi-bath Hexaplex trunculus shellfish dye on hand-loomed Levantine cloth.
